59 Stop Motion Animation

Page 1 Stop Motion Animation.Stop motion animations.Stop motion animations are created by a series of images, every image is very similar to the last and every movement or change has to be done very settle to make it work. If you have people walking around in your sma then they will have to walk slower than normal, so when you put your series of images together the person looks as though they are walking at normal speed. A normal sop motion animation will have about 15 different images per second; you can however have more images per second.

We created are class SMA by all being in a group and walking around extremely slowly, to try and give the effect that we were all gliding across the floor without even lifting a foot. It worked quite well and when we put it together after resizing the images and editing into a stop motion animation we were able to see how effective it was. We later got put into groups where me and my group did a stop monition animation of a snail race.Which i personally think worked well, as the snails movements are all done well and are planning all went to plan. Are group also put a lot of effort into making the snails, and towards the end of are stop monition animation we have to turn the tripod around to se able to see to snails cross the Finnish line. Which work very well considering the camera didn't move the focus.

This is the mind map me and my group made for inspiration to help us create
a good SMA. Once we has decided we wanted to base are SMA on a snail race we made a story board which helped us all plan out what every second would include of and how the snail race would go.

Peter Gabriel’s sledge hammer video was released in 1986 and it was massive hit, especially in Canada. Peter Gabriel won many awards for sledgehammer including Grammy awards: best male vocal performance, song of the year and record of the year. The music video itself won a few awards including best British video of the year at the Brit awards and then 8 1996 MTV video music awards, the most awards one music video has ever won. It took a week to create the music video with peter working long hours to get every frame of the animation right. The animation was directed by Stephen R. Johnson and produced by Adam Whittaker.Personally I like the Sledgehammer video, as many people do. I think it’s a very creative music video and especially like the part with the dancing cooked chickens and when peter is surrounded by moving furniture.

Here are some SMA'a that i took inspiration from.

Wallace and grommit is a stop motion animation which uses plasticine instead of people. Wallace and Grommit are both moulded out of plasticine and there movements and facial expression change ever so slightly on every image which gives the allusion that you’re watching a film instead of a serious of images. Wallace and Grommit has been a really successful stop motion animation. Not only were the characters created out of plasticine, but the whole village where the two are set to live, including all the villages people. Personally I love the Wallace and Grommit series and movie and really appreciate all the effort that went in to every shot and movement Wallace and Grommit did. Wallace and Grommit were created by Aardman animations.

This is my own SMA with sound. This wasn't my original idea to have my SMA as a bath being run, but my first idea wasn't successful as i tried to make my SMA about animals (made out of playdoug) but parts of my animal's got out of shape and legs and arms fell off during my attempt of making it. Personally I enjoy my SMA of the bath being run  because I find it joyful, however I can think of ways I could of improved it, for example having a title at the start.

Adding sound to your SMA.Adding sound to your SMA is actually quite simple, if you don't have any music on your itunes account you have to choose a song from youtube and put it into youtube converter.  Then you need to drag that file into quick time player and save as a .MOV file. Once you have done this you need to drag the .mot file into photoshop. Once you have that file in Photoshop you are easily able just to drag it into your animation and then press enter. Once this is done your animation should play successfully with sound.

Final Evaluation-

Even though I had a few difficulties while doing this unit, I really enjoyed it and have learnt a lot from it. The few difficulties I had were putting sound on my SMA, for some reason it took several attempts but I managed it in the end. Another problem that I had was that I had to create my SMA twice because the first time I created it on bridge, it kept freezing and being unable to play properly. There are many things I have learnt which are how SMA's actually work, and how many frames per second you need to do to make a successful one. I have also built some new skills up on photo shop, learnt that if your SMA had gaps you just need to rename the photographs and got more confident with mac computers. My favourite thing about doing this unit was probably doing are group SMA'S, when I was working with Becky, Ben and Marcus. I really loved are idea and we got on really well as a group, we also managed to create are SMA successfully without having to seek help. Overall i feel like i did well to keep up on this topic, as i understand everything well and even though i did have a few computer difficulties i've managed to get through them and finish my SMA. I didn't find this unit too challenging, but i do need to build up my skills on photo shop.
